  Dear Peter,

I have received your letter and I’m glad to explain to you the two-child policy in China.

The Chinese government recently plans to change the one-child policy into two-child policy, meaning that every family in China is allowed to have two children. Now my parents have made a decision to give birth to a second child, which worries me a great deal. Tough it is good to have a brother or sister to grow up with, I have to share everything with him or her. Most importantly, what if the love from my parents is totally switched to the new child? As you have a younger sister, did you have similar problems? What’s your opinion about this?

  Yours

  Li Hua

Nowadays, most students born between 1978 and 1990 are the only child of their families. I am one of them. Personally speaking, I do not want to be the only child of my family.

The reason why I am unwilling to be the only child is quite obvious. I always feel lonely and helpless. I have ever discussed it with my classmates and they have got the same feelings as me. When school is over, we go back home and have no one to talk with, for parents are busy with their jobs or house chores. Even when they have leisure time, due to the generation gap, we find we have nothing in common. On our way to adults, we have met a lot of trouble on which we linger and ponder. If each of us has an elder brother or sister, we can consult him or her. Of course, brothers and sisters are not always under an atmosphere of cooperation. Sometimes they quarrel; sometimes they argue; sometimes they compromise. Being not the only child in the family offers us early experiences of getting along with each other. The feeling of loneliness delays our ability to cope with others, because most of our childhood, we stay alone more than stay with others.

We all hope to have a sibling to release ourselves from the trouble above. Probably, when we grow mature and find we can substitute a sibling with friends, cousins or hobbies, we will not feel lonely any longer.

Last week, my parents went to Guilin to visit their friends, so I have the chance to go to Guilin with them. I felt so excited, I had heard about Guilin many times, people told me that the scenery there was very beautiful. When I arrive there, I could feel the air was different from the city I lived, the air there was so fresh. The second day, my parents went to see the scenery, we rent a boat, enjoying the magnificent mountains and clean water. At that moment, I felt I was one member of the Guilin people. People claim that Guilin’s mountain and water rank the first in the world, now I believe. I want to go to visit Guilin again.

The Story of Cinderella

For most girls, I believe they must have read the story about Cinderella. The story tells about a beautiful and kind girl named Cinderella, her mother dies when she is very small, so his father marries another lady who has two daughters. When the father dies, Cinderella is bulled by his step-mother and step-sisters, but she keeps nice to them. One day, Cinderella meets a prince and when she joins the party, she has to run away before midnight. The prince finally finds her by his missing glass shoe. Finally, Cinderella lives a happy life and her step-mother and step-sisters are punished. The story tells people that if we are kind to others, we will have the good return.

Is It Meaningful to Receive College Education?

Given the fact that many college students havedifficulties in finding jobs in the recent, thousands ofhigh school students are reported to refuse to takethe National College Entrance Examination. The newsseems so convincing that many students, theirparents, and the society reach the conclusion thatreceiving college education is a waste of time andmoney. Undoubtedly, these students can earn some money working in big cities or runningtheir own business in the near future. However, I am of opinion that this view is myopic, which isto the detriment of personal development and China’s overall growth in the long term.

Firstly, in terms of personal development, university is not a vocational training center despitethe factthat a university diploma indicates graduates are more likely to find decent jobs.Instead, university is a place for personal cultivation and improvement. In universities, students will learn to find their real interests, perfect their personality, and form right outlookstoward the world.Furthermore, students will learn to gather, analyze, and evaluate informationso that they can resolve problems in their lives. For those who are suspicious of the value ofhigher learning to some extent, they can be regarded as plutolatry. They worship money andbelieve that money is everything in their lives.

Secondly, in terms of national growth, the advancement of a nation is characterized by itsgreatness of high education. In this sense, universities are the centers of research andacademic exploration.Take theUnited States for instance.Among the top 100 universities inthe world, the majority of them are located in theUnited States. The advancement of US higheducation is indicative of the fact that those universities produce the most Nobel Prizelaureates in comparison with other countries.American universities also turn out to be amagnet for most smart students around the world. Those universities contribute tremendousshare to the US’ growth through scientific and technological support.

In China, if the belief that receiving college education is a waste of time and money can not becorrectedin time, it is inevitable that China can only reap short-term GDP growth but will bedeprived of opportunity to become a competitive international players in the long run, for thehuman resource will be drained eventually.

In sum, receiving college education will benefit both individual and the country.Indicative of thedire job market for college graduates is not the uselessness of college education.Instead, college education means we should study harder to make a full preparation for the future.

Study the picture above carefully and write an essay entitled “After Graduation” In the essay, you should (1)describe the picture (2)interpret its meaning (3)give your opinion about the phenomenon.

You should write about 200 words neatly on ANSWER SHEET2. (20 points)

Graduation is an important event for all of us. It is the divide between school and a full-time working life. After graduation, we are no longer students protected by parents and teachers, but a member of the real society. Let’s look at the picture first. A graduate is told by his teacher, “You must depend on yourself during your life journey after graduation…” He finds that some former graduates fly high into the sky while some experience a drastic fall.

The picture tells us a principle. Graduation is not the end of your education, but the beginning of your real journey. At school, we may find we are no different from our classmates. However, there will be a great gap between us after graduation. Some may try their best to improve themselves and become the mainstay of our ear era? While some are indulged in creature comforts and give up their initial ideals.

Therefore, we should remember that graduation is the beginning of our real life journey. If you want to be a person useful to society, you should make all efforts to learn as much as possible from others and improve yourself. In this way, you may fly high in the sky.

We call the Yellow River our "Mother River" and we also see the Chang, jiang River as our "Father River" since these two rivers are the source of the civilization of Chinese people. Our remote ancestors lived along the river, so both rivers have witnessed the growth of Chinese people and they are our valuable heritage.

My childhood is closely associated with the Changjiang River. When I was young, my father often took me to the riverside.I was always struck by the beautiful scenery of the river. The water was pure, clean and blue. Some birds flew down, scraped the water and roared up suddenly and some grass floated in the water quietly. Looking into the distance, I saw the river wandering toward the east. However, after the thunderstorm, the water was turbulent with some whirls in the middle of the river. The fresh breeze gave my face a feeling of moisture. Even today I still remember the magnificent scene and the impressive feeling.

Some unpleasant changes have taken place since then. Many hills alongside the river have become bald. More and more mud and dust are being washed down into the river each year. Worse

still, driven by economic profits, some factories keep pouring pollutants into the river.

Luckily people have been awakened to their obligation. They learn a lesson from the big flood in 1998 that we have to nourish our Changjiang River just as it has nourished us and protect it just as it has protected us. Only after a harmonious relationship has been established between men and the river can we prevent the tragedy happening again and restore beauty to our Changjiang River.

  Saturday Nov. 15, 20xx Cloudy

My teacher gave me an assignment "experience life" last week. I had been thinking how to finish it because I had never done any thing by myself before.

Mother was out today. It was a good chance to complete the assignment. Seeing the barrel was empty, I decided to fetch water from the well.

I took the empty barrel and went towards the well outside the yard. It snowed yesterday, so the alley was very slippery. A layer of thickice was frozen on the platform of the well. I was frightened by the sight, but I gathered my courage to walk towards it. I stepped on the platform carefully. After standing steadily and squatting down slowly, I hooked the barrel at the end of the rope and put the rope down slowly. I made an effort to drag the barrel up after it was filled with water. I was very careful because it was easy to slip and fall. Then, I carried the barrel of water and returned to my house. My figners were frozen stiff. The alley was so slippery that I walked with difficultly. Suddenly, I slipped and fell down, water in the barrel totally poured down on the ground. I realized my effort was in vain. I hated myself.

I failed to finish the assignment but I did experience life through a trifle which seemed easy but difficult to do well. Such was my first experience of life.
